Introduction of Zhejiang Technology & Service Platform of New Drug Innovation (PNDI)

PNDI devotes researches on pharmacy, pharmacodynamics, toxicology, natural drug research and drug quality control. It integrates the technological resources of new drug innovation of Zhejiang University of Technology, Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences, Zhejiang Medical University, Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Drug Testing Consortium by sharing resources. PNDI will provide various technological innovation and consultations such as: new drug screening, process improvement, drug efficacy studies and safety evaluation to shorten the process of new drug innovation for industries. It has provided effective support in the new drug development and scientific and technological innovation for Zhejiang pharmaceutical industries.

PNDI, one of the two public technological innovation platforms in Zhejiang province, was established at the end of 2004. The development of platform was built by membership and cooperation between platform and industries. It focuses on the innovation of environment-friendly green pharmaceutical technologies which reserve the natural resources, and reduce pollution from the source. For nearly three years after the establishment of the platform, three class 3.1 new chemical drugs were developed successfully. The pre-clinical efficacy and toxicology studies of one first class new biological drug, one first class new chemical drug and one class two new traditional chinese herbal medicine have been finished. These three new drugs have passed national drug evaluation and entered clinical trial smoothly. PNDI has launched studies on the new pharmaceutical techniques and technologies such as the green technological transformation of drug synthesis and promotion of the application in industries. The platform also has started the innovation of photodynamic drug, target organ administration and immunotoxicological technologies. Currently, the platform has been funded by National Science Fundation, Ministry of Commerce of China, Ministry of Education of China, Science and Technology Department of Zhejiang Province and Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation.? In 2006, the platform has 14 new projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation; One 863 leading project; Two major projects funded by Zhejiang Province; 15 key scientific research projects funded by Ministry of Education of China and Department of Science and Technology of Zhejiang Province; Four projects funded by Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation and a number of other projects funded by other foundations. More than 120 of SCI papers and 48 of EI papers from the platform have been published; 13 authorized patents were awarded; 22 more patents have been applied. The platform also has more than 100 projects funded by the industries. The new funding are nearly 15 million yuans. The platform was awarded a first class Technical Invention Award from "the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association". Based on using the resouces of the platform and service for the industries, the platform has helped to write or edit more than 20 manuscripts for the SME Innovation Fund and has completed structural measurement of about 300 of new drugs or intermediates.

PNDI has fulfilled the requirements for the pre-clinical studies of new drug such as series of state-of-the-art equipments; Organized structure and management system; Various management policies and standardized practice procedures; A team with competitive skills, highly motivated, team-oriented, stable and composed by lots of young scientists. The platform will provide pre-clinical research services on pharmacy, pharmacology and toxicology.
